What you should know
SVG to PNG turns a vector drawing into an ordinary image. An SVG is a mathematical description — strokes, curves, text — that only browsers and drawing tools can display; a PNG opens anywhere and fits into any document or social network.
Rendering is done by your browser, at the size declared in the SVG file. An SVG without dimensions is rendered at 1024 × 768 pixels. The drawing's transparency is preserved.
Strengths
- The PNG opens in every application and on every social network
- Faithful rendering by the browser's own engine
- Transparency kept around the drawing
- No upload: rendering happens on your device
Limitations to know
- The image is no longer vector and cannot be enlarged without blur
- External fonts and images referenced by the SVG are not loaded
- SVG animations and scripts are not carried over
- Size is capped at 8,192 pixels on the longest side
When to use it
Convert to publish a logo or a diagram where SVG is refused: social networks, messaging apps, word processors, online printing. Always keep the original SVG: it is the file to go back to for a different size.
Quality, size and compatibility
The PNG is sharp at its rendering size, but not beyond. If you need a large image, increase the SVG's width and height attributes before converting: the vector drawing will then be rendered directly at high resolution.
Frequently asked questions
- Why did the text in my SVG change font?
- The SVG probably relies on a font installed on your computer or loaded from the internet. An SVG image rendered by the browser cannot reach external resources: convert the text to outlines in your drawing tool before exporting.
- How do I get a larger PNG?
- Change the width and height declared in the SVG, then convert it again. Enlarging the PNG afterwards would only make it blurry.
