Convert your files in an instant
Video, audio, images and documents. Conversion runs in your browser through FFmpeg.wasm: fast, and your files stay on your device. Only a few office conversions go through our server, and you are told before anything is sent.
Conversion runs inside your browser
For video, audio, images and most documents, FileXvert does not send your files to a conversion server. The encoder it uses, FFmpeg — the same one found in professional editing suites — is loaded as WebAssembly directly in the tab on first use. Your file is read from your disk, decoded and re-encoded by your own machine, and the result is created on the spot before download.
This architecture has a verifiable consequence: once the page has loaded, you can disconnect from the network and the conversion still works. No byte of the file travels over the Internet, no file name is recorded, and closing the tab immediately frees the memory used. Only a few office conversions, which browsers cannot do faithfully (Word, PowerPoint, OpenDocument, RTF or HTML documents converted to PDF or between each other, PDF to Word, Excel or PDF/A), go through our server: you are told before upload, and the file is deleted there as soon as the result is returned.
It also has limits worth knowing: speed depends on your device rather than on our servers, and a very large file may reach the memory available in the tab. For occasional use, that is the price of privacy that is not negotiable.
Which format should you choose?
The right format depends on the destination, not on habit. A few simple markers avoid most unnecessary conversions and quality losses:
- Photo to send or publish: JPEG, read everywhere; WebP, lighter, for a website.
- Logo, icon or screenshot: PNG for pixel images, SVG for a vector drawing.
- Video to share or play on an unknown device: MP4. For a website, WebM is often lighter.
- Music to archive: FLAC or WAV, lossless. To listen on an old device: MP3.
- Document to send: PDF, whose layout does not move. To edit: DOCX or Markdown.
What FileXvert does not do
No online storage, no queue, no monitored quota: the service keeps neither your files, nor their names, nor their content. It does not circumvent the protection of encrypted or DRM-restricted files either, and it does not replace editing software for professional work.
